The Expanding World of Engineer

In my opinion, an engineer accomplishes the systematic approach in designing solutions and analytical thinking due to the tertiary education that was brought upon them as what Prof Ramakrishna had stated in his article. With the more demanding needs of engineers around the world due to its broad influence in other sectors namely manufacturing and service industries, the tertiary education itself has expand its platform to a more analytical approach in educating the engineers . More problem based learning methods were introduced to enhance analytical thinking and at the same time systematic ways of solving technical problems to compliment the job scope thereafter.

In an article excerpted from Engineers today: Multiple levels of expertise”, published in Oct 2006, Keith Nobusch shared his views in the role of engineers today. He mentioned that the engineers today needs to be more than a technical expert and that he or she needs to truly understand the impact of manufacturing and services on the overall business strategy.

This is mainly due to the collaboration of different departments in a company and having the engineers to have the expertise in multiple disciplines. I believe engineer today needs to be more than a technical expert; engineers have to truly understand the impact of manufacturing and services on the overall business strategy. Engineers need to be able to see the big picture of their role in the field and that the ability to take systems approach to problem solving is mandatory.

While these fundamental skills are necessary, engineers today are expected to complement their technical knowledge and ability with several other skills, both to add value to their contributions to the organisation and enjoy personal achievement and success.

  1. In my opinion it's a clear and a succinct article about the engineer today.

But as to share the question I always ask myself can we really call that an engineer is a profession like doctors or teachers?

A medical student is trained to be a doctor by profession, where we as engineers end up doing multiple disciplines. Doesn't that sounds like we hog the opportunities from the real professions?

  2. Hi dhana, in my opinion, engineer is a profession. We are trained to be an engineer but we can choose a different path after graduation, it's just a plus point for us.;)

There is doctor becoming a painter, and i know of a lawyer who end up to be a songwriter. We, not necessarily be what we were trained to be. I guess there's either too many engineers or perhaps, being an engineer is too stressful..that's why trained engineers go to different path.
